Salvia nemorosa ‘Ostfriesland’
Height x Spread: 50cm x 45cm
‘Ostfriesland’ bears dense spikes of vivid, violet purple flowers with pink bracts, on upright, bushy stems with rough, narrow, oval, mid-green leaves. Aromatic sage-like foliage. Widely valued for its intense colour, blooms really sing out against pinks and crimsons, picking up on the colour of its bracts.
It looks wonderful planted in drifts with grasses, but makes a great specimen plant for a Mediterranean or gravel garden. All summer long into autumn, bees will flock to its flowers. To get the best results grow in full sun, in a light, reasonably fertile soil, that is well drained but moist.
